This is a great question for the Mercury 3L High Performance Board.
The ProXS is based on technology and designs pioneered on the Racing XS line of engines.
In the case of the 250 Optimax (XS vs. ProXS), the powerheads are essentially identical.
The XS has a shorter warranty, but can be ordered with nearly any gearcase. In many cases, it sports stiffer mounts, some midsection/driveshaft housing differences, and a heavy-duty swivel bracket. It's also available with an "offshore" single-ram trim system (moving the pump into the boat).

So the only performance difference is the ecu?Powerheads are the same?
In the case of the 250 XS vs. 250 ProXS.... the powerheads (and PCM) are identical.![]()

So the rev limiter is the same? What is the max rpm's on these motors?
Recommended Propping RPM is 5500-6000.
Maximum RPM is 6300.![]()

Performance wise between these 2 motors what would be the benefit of one versous the other. I have a 21ft checkmate that the hull wieghs 1300 lbs.
As stated, the powerheads are basically identical. Propshaft horsepower is essentially the same.
The ProXS comes with a longer standard warranty- but only one gearcase available.
The Racing XS has a shorter warranty.... but you can choose "nearly any gearcase" in the lineup.![]()
Unless you "reasonably expect" your hull to achieve 85+ MPH, I'd recommend the ProXS model.![]()

Don: I like that word "essentially"![]()
but what is the actual difference between the two aside from what you have already said? Fuel rails, PCU settings?
That aside I agree that unless your boat is capable of 85+ get the Pro XS, I'd get it with that new Verado style case and know you got the badest case w/o a cone out there![]()

The powerheads are IDENTICAL. Used the word "essentially" simply due to the fact that there are slight "output" variances in ANY powerhead, from one to the next.![]()
