    OIL-CONSUMPTION ???

I've noticed my oil % compared to gas % maybe off ??. I'm useing two gal. oil to 50 gal. gas . I can run for days on 50 gal. gas .It seems funnie when Ifill-up with gas , I have to put 50$ worth of oil in also .

    Must be an Optimax!

You have to remember... you're using less fuel... but still have to provide adequate oil for the length of time run, and rpm it's running at.

For accurate comparison, you'd run, let's say an EFI for 2 hours at 4000 RPM, and a comparable Opti for 2 hours at the same RPM. Oil consumption will be "similar" (the opti may use SLIGHTLY less oil), but the Opti will also use less fuel. Hence, it may "seem" like you're using more oil... but the truth is, it's about the same... just LESS FUEL!

Keep in mind, the Opti's will use "more oil than normal" until the break-in clock expires (during the initial 1-2 hours of break-in, if following approriate break-in proceedures).

Shouldn't it be directly proportional to the amount of fuel you use? If a 50-1 ratio is recommended, shouldn't you use 1 gallon of oil to 50 gallons of gas or at least close to that, rather than 2 gallons of oil?

I have noticed the same thing with my EFI. It uses way more oil than a true 50 to 1 ratio.....

    Re: OIL-CONSUMPTION ??? (Jiggernaut)

There actually IS a "specified" ratio for any particular RPM.

Mercury's oil injection systems provide a "variable" ratio of oil to the engine, based on RPM and throttle position.

On Carb/EFI models (with mechanical pumps), the ratio is controlled by a linkage arm, which, based on throttle position, "manipulates" the ratio. Hence, when the oil injection is removed, you must use a "fixed ratio" that is sufficient for all RPM conditions that the engine will run. Usually, standard production models with oil injection removed are run at a 50:1 pre-mix ratio, while higher RPM (or higher performance) models are run at a MINIMUM of 40:1 pre-mix ratio.

On the later EFI's and Opti's, the electronic oil injection pump varies the oil output, based on direction from the ECM/PCM (an "oil shot count" which is based upon a combination of factors, such as load, demand, throttle position, and RPM- to name a few). Hence, this type of system has the ability to provide "more precisely varied" ratios.

Confusing... I know... but at least maybe this helps to understand the general operational parameters.

    Re: OIL-CONSUMPTION ??? (EuropeanAM)

I have an 05 250 XS and I am using around 1 gal of oil to 50 gals of gas.

I know it is no where near the 2 gals per 50 gals as stated above. Most of my running is done between 4000 and 5800 rpms.

I would think 2 per 50 is way to much oil used. But I am not an expert just an engineer.

    Re: OIL-CONSUMPTION ??? (fastglass1)

I've heard that these motors consume more oil at idle speeds, than at higher rpms. I know a couple of people that have similar situations of burning 2 gallons of oil per tank of gas. I've also heard that idling a lot even when using quickleen can cause plugs to foul as well.

    Re: OIL-CONSUMPTION ??? (jovous21)

I bought a h-b 1197 & I do alot of idle speeds ,also I ran nonstop for 70 miles up & 70 miles back on miss. river . Now that was 5900 rpm's & 50 to 54 gal. gas . My oil tank was overflowing when I left & when refilled next day 2 gal didn't bring it back to overflow level . I like Don's answer .I don't think xs's are a 50%mix anymore

I have a 225 efi when I first got it the oil tank had a red color oil not sure of the brand. I think it was Yamaha oil it burnt 2 gals on 55 gals of fuel . I started using premium plus mercury oil now it uses about 1 gal on a tank.
