Smithville

I have heard a lot about a comeback with this lake recently. I know some nice bags have been coming in this Spring. Being fairly new here (2006), what happened to Smithville in the past?

I am fishing Olathe Bass Club's tournament there this weekend. Hopefully I can find me a few keepers.

Re: Smithville (PETE-OBC-YA)

There was a big fish fish kill a few years back somewhere around the 2003-2004 time frame. Used to be you couldn't go to Smithville without catching a 6 pounder. We fished a club tournament there in 01 or 02 and one member had 4 fish all over 6 pounds in the dead of summer. They have planted a lot of grass over there so the bigger fish are on the rebound.

Several tournaments there this weekend so we will all be jockeying for a turn at the better known locations. Of note, I have yet to catch a good fish there this year.

Re: Smithville (dragracenova)

Thanks for the thought, but I BLANKED!!! Less than 6 lbs. won our tournament and it was a single fish at 5.86 lbs. 9.5 hours of giving it hell and nothing!

It looked incredible, but the skies were blue and the fish were scattered. Too dirty of water to look for beds. No clue where the beds were made prior to changing water levels.

A whole lotta crappies were being caught though. Nice ones too.

After fishing Sunday I think you were not the only one looking for spawning fish, the fish that I found and the few bites I could get were post spawn females. I found the spawned females to be on the flats leading back out to the lake. I tried fishing shallow on saturday for spawners and never got a bite.

Cheaper to keep a kid in tourney fishing than paying attorneys to keep them out of jail !!

Re: Smithville (mhowdy)

Hey Mike,
It is $115 for new members, $100 for returning members. The extra $15 covers your brand new plaque for our end-of-year banquet. We have no entry fees for individual tournaments. Some are 1-day and others are 2-day. We always have $5 side pots per day for Big Bass and Heavy Stringer. I believe you can be prorated for the remainder of the season. We have fished 3 tournies so far. We have the best bunch of guys and you will not find a better president than Paul Marsh. He flat out busts ass for all of us and the fact that he is Promotions Manager at the Olathe Bass Pro Shops doesn't hurt either. We are fortunate. Go Cheetahs!!!
