Police: Arrest Made In Kelsey Smith Homicide

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- An arrest has been made in the homicide investigation of 18-year-old Kelsey Smith.

Late Wednesday night, police said Edwin R. Hall, 26, of Olathe, was being held in the Johnson County Jail in connection with the slaying of Smith.

Law enforcement crews combing a large wooded area near Longview Lake Wednesday found a body believed to be missing teenager Kelsey Smith, who was abducted from an Overland Park Target store parking lot Saturday night.

Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said Smith's body was found about 1:30 p.m. across the state line near Grandview, Mo., about 20 miles east of the abduction site.

Positive identification was pending, but Douglass said volunteer searchers could stop their work. He did not say how the woman was slain, but KMBC reported that there were signs of trauma to the body.

"As I understand she was found at a wooded area, but I can't say whether she was directly concealed by bushes," Douglass told reporters during an afternoon news conference.

No... Not sure. I know she was 18 & had a HS boyfriend and just finished HS and was enrolled at KState for this fall... The subject that was arrested is 26 and did not live close... I'm guessing it was a crime of opportunity, he saw a vulnerable young woman and took a chance in broad daylight... Time will tell.

Sam and I were just exchanging IMs about this topic. How helpless the parents must have felt... As the father of two teenage girls, I'd be hard pressed not to take matters into my own hands if I were in their shoes.

And whats even worse than that is when you see an argument or struggle going on in the Parking lot in broad daylight.......how can NO ONE see whats going on........and if they did why did NO ONE approach them and find out WTH was going on? unless he was already in the car before she got there......and of thats the case why again did NO ONE in a Target parking lot see any "unusal" activity at the car...............sometimes I think some people just dont give a crap about one another anymore

In one of my many pro gun discussions an "Anti gun" guy says there's no reason anyone would ever have to carry a gun to Wal-Mart... Case and point... Had someone with a CCW been there and been willing to step up perhaps they could have prevented the loss of life.

I understand fully what you are saying Bob but the fact still remains that even having a CCW wuld not eliminate this threat at all...........and it would still take People to be aware of whats going on and there surrounding.

BTW......I just saw this on my Local news this afternoon over lunch and they showed the scumbag on the Target Video cam.........you wouldnt have know a thing. Looked like some regular Joe to me
