    2003 evinrude ficht question

Rebuilt my motor and it's ready so I put some cups on it and tried to start it but it wouldn't start.i know it has to be double oiled and computer has to be set to do that but has that anything to do with just starting it and letting in idle? Check engine light came on after a few tries so I stopped just wondering is there something else you do to it?it would hit a few times but never crank up.injector problem or have you gotta reset the computer for it to even crank?

Do you have the software? You need to know what code was set before continuing....Where is Colbert? I live in Calhoun, 25 miles from Dalton, 60 miles from Atlanta.

I'd verify the CPS setting and make sure it is connected as well as the TPS.

You will need to do a sync and link to verify the timing pointer the throttle plate opening and the CPS air gap then the EMM timing using the Diagnostic Software. Do you have a manual?

Set the CPS. Turn the key to on and make sure the system pressurizes. Make sure the plugs are indexed. If you didn't mess with the TPS it should at least pop. When you spin it.

Re: 2003 evinrude ficht question (ChampioNman)

Plugs are indexed and I have a key pad so when I hit start the first time it runs it's system check and I can hear something running which I guess is fuel system and it would turn over and pop a little but wouldn't ever crank.it almost seemed like it wasn't firing on some cylinders but I'm not a mechanic so I really aint sure.check engine light did come on so I'm scared to try anymore.

Need the diags to tell you what the check code is. Make sure your coils are installed correctly too. Hope you are using an bonafide Evinrude shop manual.

so, are you saying you rebuilt your Ficht but you are not a mechanic??? I also think you need to be a bit more precise as to what you mean by "wouldnt ever crank" do you mean it would turn over by the starter (that is cranking) but not start?

Yes I'm saying I'm not a mechanic I got a evinrude repair manual and learned as I went.had nothing to lose cause I wasn't spending 3500-4000 on a power head and figured I'll just try and do it and if nothing else at least I learned a lot about about engine.i actually have enjoyed working on it.i was trying to say that it would crank or turn over by the starter but wouldn't start.sorry for the confusion I'm not a mechanic and I do appreciate all the advice I have received

Nolem, Crank is a southern term here in the US and it means the motor will spin but not start. Crunk is also a southern term meaning the same thing.

OK, you've done the hard work, but now you need to get it to a certified Tech for start up... I've heard nothing but good of the boys from Hwy 72 Marine.....

OK, don't get me wrong, I was not trying to make out like you should not have had a go, as you mention, you had nothing to loose (well not a lot) but a Ficht is quite a complicated motor when compared to your old carb models, you have the genuine manual, so you have a start, the terms used can often be confusing, but if we all 'speak" the same terms, it makes it easier to try to help.
