    KS Boat Property Tax?

I live in KS, bought a new boat in 2004 and registered it in KS. I use the boat equally in Missouri and KS but store the boat in Missouri for 4-5 months during the winter. When I originally registered the boat I put down Missouri as to where I would be using the boat.

My question is that I don't get a property tax form each year from the state of KS. Is this normal? I expected to get a form each year where I would indicate that the boat is located in Missouri on Jan 1. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on?

I have heard that when you have a boat in a different state other than kansas on january 1st, the county or state of kansas will not send you a tax bill...nor will the state that you had the boat in on january 1st...just what i heard

The stupid Kansas Law is: Where you boat is on Jan 1st is the taxing jurisdiction. So, If your boat is in Missouri on Jan 1 it is not going to be on your personal property tax. Lot of business move there equipment over to MO on Jan 1 to avoid these nussicance tax.

Perfect example- I bought a new boat in January- after the 1st. I received a prorated tax statement for the boat from Miami County the other day for $1080 in property taxes. Called the county and the lady told me that if Iowa, where I keep the boat, doesn't collect property taxes, then I just need to send her a notarized letter from the property owner where the boat was stored and she would straighten this out. Iowa does not collect property taxes yearly, just registration fees. Letter is forthcoming.

A grand a year taxes on a new rig? That's grand larceny if you ask me. I sure wish I lived closer to a border.

    Re: (Jiggernaut)

I got into a discussion with this with our Treasurer in NE......they stated that if I Stored boat or fished in Kansas more than NE I would have to tag it for Kansas.....consiquently I would pay the property tax for the county in which mt boat resided or is fished the most......I told her she was nuts if I was going to pay Kansas property tax on my boat.........I dont know how you guys do it.....now in NE we do have to pay Wheel Tax on trailers and must be registered/payed separate & is done every year....then boat registration is done every 2 but only for a new NE boating tag.......Not that much cost overall but they do get us with the sales tax thing

Do you guys get statements each year asking where your boat was on Jan 1? I don't get these from the state.

You won't if you put on the Ks registraition that it is in Missouri. All you will get is the renewal every 3 years from fish and game. If you put Missouri on the form they do not notify the county assessor that it is on the tax role...

Re: KS Boat Property Tax? (Whiteranger)

I put down Missouri as my primary location that the boat would be located when I filled out my original KS registeration. I dock the boat and fish in Missouri more than I do in KS. I also store the boat in Missouri for 4-5 months each year in the caves. This must be why I don't get the notices from the KS property tax guys. I expected to have to check the box every year that my boat was not located in KS on Jan 1 each year.
