    Can you help Identify ?

Saturday morning i was working in the garage and came across this 12 to 13 inch snake, I am not sure what species it is and was wonderign if anyone here knows their snakes??

You might also notice this snake had a slight accident when it had a minor altercation with the shovel.

    Thanks

I don't know my snakes very well, but I would've done just what you did and end its life.

May be a sub species of Gopher Snake or Water Snake. I don't know but it's about the closest thing to what I could find on this link http://www.trailquest.net/SNnonpoi.html

    Not that i noticed.

There is no standing water within 500 yards of the garage. Never occured to me to be a water snake

I'm not sure but growing up we generally classified snakes as Diamond head = bad/poisenous; round head = harmless. I would say that one has a diamond head.
