looking at a 1996 johnson 150hp how were these motors, any problems?

Hi all, got a question, im looking at a pretty clean 96 stratos with a 1996 johnson 150, current owner says its never gave any problems except 1 time while getting on plane the alarm went off, said he throttled back & shut it down. Turned out being an oil line broke causing it to throw alarms. Says he got it shut down right away. Also how does one identify what model this motor is? Nada shows about 4-5 different model 150's for that year. Any comments are greatly appreciated

If its got boobs, tires, siding, or an outboard motor you have trouble!!!

From the rear of the engine on left side of the motor mount bracket is a tag, should read something like this J150xxxx The 150 Fastrikes were great engines, as with any used engine, it should be checked out.

The V-6 loopers from OMC were some of the best outboards every made. I had a 95 175 fast strike on a 95 Stratos 285. The only maint. I ever did was the basics, i.e. plugs, water pump, LU lube, etc. That motor ran like a bat out of heck, and never gave me one problem. I sold it to a guy not far from me and he still runs it today. They do like the gas and oil. Get the compression checked, and I would personally disconect the VRO, and mix it manually. The only problems I ever really heard of in those motors was the worm gear in the VRO would go.
Pimpin' ain't easy, but it's necessary.

I have a 96 Johnson 150, never, ever had a lick of trouble with it. Been a few yrs since the plugs were last changed but still runs great. I couldnt be happier with it.

There's not a worm gear on the E/J VRO. It works off crankcase pulses. you must be thinking of the old Mercs. The J/E VRO of that vintage are the best out there......
