looking at a boat with a 99 rude ficht 225

Hey guys I am looking a boat with a 99 ficht on it 225 HP, not sure on the hours on it, but is there anything I should be concerned about it with that motor. I heard that they had problems and some of them are bombs, I love the boat and it is a really good price, so if you guys could help me out on it I would appreciate it. Also can a mechanic pull info of the these years of motor from them computer. Thanks

In general, the 225 was a good motor. They had issues with the 150/175 models. Compression check, make sure updates are done.

Was it the same motor and HP that you had problems with, and what blew up a piston?

Friend of mine had a 1999 225 ficht motor and it blew up. It popped a hold on port side of block just behind the starter.

Did not overheat. The Fichts were famous for popping. My mechanic has been doing omc for over 25 years and when i was rebuilding a boat and looking for a motor he said to run from the fichts....For everyone two sold he would get one blown up. Even if he rebuilt them was same ole thing....pop........Typical location seems to happen is the port side of motor behind the starter. I have heard of guys running the dfi motors and have gotten alot of hours and dependable use. Have heard of the 200hp dfi's being dependable. Another friend in my club owned a etec225hp. 4 powerheads later he switched to mercury. I'm running a 90 johnson 150 gt and besides carbs being rebuilt and minor things it has been very dependable.
Hope this helps, im me if you have more questions.

you would think that after 25 years, your mechanic would have known what he was doing.

I'm not sure but mine is carbed and i run engine detuner at least once a year in it. Just make sure if it has alot of carbon buildup on the heads you tend to it.

    Re: (jshull70)

That 203 is a sweet hull. I would run the XD-100 oil in her, be sure to keep all the required maintenance, such as all updates, keep a good, strong, at least 1000 cca starting battery in her, no wing nuts on batt, ss nuts with lock washers, all grounds on the block clean and shiney....and #1, if you want to know your engine, and work on it yourself, invest in the genuine OMC/BRP manual, and the software and laptop to help stay on top of things....JMHO

    Re: (jshull70)

keep the Champions, there is a plug list at the top of the page (I think) not too sure about engine DEtuner, but if you use good oil, then to have to decarbon is not common as it was/is with cheaper oil.

    Re: (noelm)

If you change plugs, you have to put a stripe down the porcelain with a magic marker in line with the open side of the electrode. This has to end up pointing toward the injector, the book will show you the optimum angle and the acceptable range and torque.
