    Spawning fish on Kentucky Lake

This weekend Mike and I found lots of three and four pound fish on a couple ledges and one ledge really holding them. Water temps were 80 degress. We were fishing in about 25-30 feet of water. The majority of the fish we caught over three pounds had bloody tails (not healing tails...dripping blood tails) and released eggs all over us and the boat. Now...my question. What are those fish full of eggs with bloody tails doing in that deep of water. They obviously had not spawned yet but they showed the battle scars of making a bed. Way too much current to make beds on the ledges we were fishing. I don't get it. I would say they were late spawners but we caught alot of fish like this and they were deep. Guess maybe Rick Clunn was not so crazy last week when he was looking for bedding fish. Any ideas?

I have caught a number of them like that also this past week....wondering if you were fishing the same deep ledge...the one I showed Mike a couple of years ago?

Don't female bass have multiple 'partners', maybe they hit a bed and don't drop all their eggs at any time? Maybe they sometimes don't release them all and them lose the urge and head back out to the ledges, particularly if a front hits at the wrong time?????

Are you saying the females aren't giving it up the way they should? Go figure...

Was out fishing today on Barkley and thought the water was littered with some type of flower pollen. After looking closer it was tons and tons of dead fry. This is the first time I have ever seen that as well.

naw, I'm saying they are holding some eggs in reserve so they can continue to give it up!!!

Dave it was the deep ledge we fished a couple of years ago. Also, there were some type of fry everywhere out there. Giant balls of them and they would come to the surface a flash silver.

Thanks Billy....I have been on N. Barkley and down around Little River and south most of last week and did not see that....I hope it something local there if it is bass fry....most likely it is shad fry or drum fry.

I caught a few fish on Cherokee in east Tn this weekend that where full of eggs and wonder if those fish were some of the first ones that moved up and spawned before the cold weather taht came through in early spring??? Is it possible for them to produce eggs and spawn twice???

I was on the lake today,,,,I pitched to a 6 lb. lg.mouth for 20 mins. and came back one hour later and she was still there,,,,swimming in a circle,,,,got her to eat a sinko,,,,and missed the hook up....I don't know if she was spawning or not,,,but she was acting just like the sight fish I was pitching to in April and May.....

Well that would explain why the folks down that way weren't catching many catfish.
I didn't notice them yesterday, but it ws so windy we fished bay drops.

Re: Spawning fish on Kentucky Lake (RangerRodney)

We had a club tourney this past Saturday out of Paris Landing, TN and I saw the dead mussels. Guys in my club speculated that jet skis went over the tops of shallow mussel beds and killed them, but I don't know what happened.

Three tournies out of Paris that AM and it took @13 lbs to win all three. Winner in our club had 12.5 or so caught on 10 1/2 inch worms.
