Chance to ride along in the TVA shock boat.

I told you guys about ridding in TVA's electroshocking boat several years ago, well they are inviting perople to ride in it again. It's a real eye opener.

"TVA is inviting anglers in the Tennessee Valley to help survey the sport fish population in the Tennessee River this spring.

Sport fish such as bluegill, black bass and crappie will be part of TVA’s annual spring fish survey beginning in mid-March and continuing through May.

Fish are collected using boat-mounted electro-fishing equipment. The units stun the fish momentarily and bring them to the surface for evaluation. Information such as abundance, distribution, age, relative weight and general health is collected and recorded.

Once weighed, measured and counted, the fish are released unharmed. Results from TVA’s fish surveys are used by state agencies to protect and improve sport fishing.

From March 12 through May 24, TVA fisheries biologists will leave designated boat ramps throughout the Valley at 7:30 a.m. and survey the fish until mid-afternoon. Participants with life jackets can join survey crews in TVA boats, or they can follow in personal boats.

The TVA survey has been conducted in the Tennessee River since 1995. To participate, call Ginger Seeber at (865) 632-6401 or email her at gseeber@tva.gov.

I took a biology class in college and we did this on the Ohio River. Never seen so many carp and drum in my life!

It was very cool though! I recommend anyone who gets the chance to help out.

Great! I'm looking at the 10th, 15th, and 16th. THe 10th they are shocking the bays I shocked with them before (the most fish they shock on KY usually), the 15th they are shocking the bay my camper is sitting at and on the 16th they are shocking right across the lake from my camper.

I picked the 8th because I will be staying across the lake at Hillmans Ferry that week.

    Thanks again

I was a biology major in college, chemistry minor. We did the same thing for an Ecology class. Waded a small creek in Rush county in Indiana. I was in charge of collecting the fish as they floated up. You wouldn't believe the numbers of smallies in the 3-5lb range we roiled up out of that little creek. I don't know how much I learned from the class, but I sure found a great place to fish!

Man that would be cool to get to ride along on that. I was fishing way up river on nolin one year and they were shocking up fish behind me so I stopped to check it out. They weren't 100 ft from me and shocked up what they guessed was an 11 lb Walleye. It was an absolute MONSTER. I don't know if it's been broken or not since then but the state record at the time was 12 something if I remember right. This was close to 20 years ago now.

They shocked up behing me one day and it made me feel real humble if you know what i mean. There were four and five pound bass all behind me and i though that i was a fair fisherman. It is unreal to see the results, if you havent tried it then by all means take advantage and do it.

Re: Chance to ride along in the TVA shock boat. (RangerRodney)

I rode the boat 2 years in a row, same bay. I got to fish the bay for an hour before they shocked it. I caught a 5lber and 2lber the first year before they shocked and thought I really knew where the fish were positioned in the bay. They shocked up one other fish in an area like I had caught my fish in. Then they went to where they knew the fish were and shocked up over 20 bass 4 lbs and bigger first pass through an area less than 100 yards long. Another boat and myself had failed to catch a keeper where all those big fish were. They put a net accross the mouth of the bay before they shock, so I know the bass didn't migrate in after I got through fishing.

Note to myself: Stay away from those areas on the schedule on those dates. It is bad enough just knowing that there are zillions of big bass laughing their ass off at me when I throw a lure in their direction without having the TVA guys bring them up so they can show me the smiles on their faces.....
