    Still have some issues

I'll try and make this as brief as possible. Last time out motor had a miss especially midrange and had a hard time building rpm's. Sparkplugs were in bad shape didn't replace this spring as they looked good on inspection at the time. While replacing them some yahoo broke this http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id=708926 . So I finally get a replacement and get the time today to get someone to verify timing as I was under the impression this was some kind of timing adjuster. The guy verifies timing but never touches this piece? Take it out afterwards and the miss is gone but motor is sluggish to 4k rpms and slowly builds to 5k where it stops and would not pull anymore. Hitting the primer makes it fall on it's face. When he checked it is was only off a degree or so he set it to 18* while cranking. We didn't re check it while running at 5k rpms that I have read is the correct procedure.

So two things what does that adjuster that I replaced actually do and opinions on what my next steps should be. Thanks

On some of the motors that part just set spring tension to make sure the timer base returned to the stop. I'll look in the service manual and let you know later. I often wondered who designed that linkage set up, it's a nightmare. No way to really set the top end timing without running the motor on a dyno or with a test wheel at 5000 RPM. You can get close, as we did on an engine rebuilds, but not right.

What is your timing at idle. And what is your RPM at idle in neutral and in gear at idle.

This wouldn't have to be adjusted to set the idle timing if the spring tension was set right. If a motor with your symtoms came to me to be fixed, the first thing I would do is check the compression and look at rhe plugs. Compression OK, check the spark, spark OK, do a sync and link. Then run on the dyno to duplicate the problem. A OEM service manual would be a great help.
