    brakes?

I have a 2000 basscat cougar and I am new to trailer brakes. My question is how do I know if my trailer brakes r working I have tried braking hard to see but I can't tell

Unplug your lights and try to back up a small incline.

I don't think mine work off the lights because I only have the flat 4 pin plug in and my trailer tongue pivots am I right or wrong in thinking this I really don't know much at all about them

If you have a 5-wire plug, the backup lights disable the brakes when you are backing. Since you have a 4-wire, you probably have drum brakes, but they will still give some resistance if you try to back up a hill on gravel.

If it's a tandem trailer, make a stop from highway speed and compare the temperature of the hubs on the brake axle to the non-brake.

Drum brakes on trailers need adjusting periodically. It's not hard to do.
