Installing new trailer plug..Project from Hell

I read all of the sticky's and diagrams, bought a new 5 flat plug from area boat dealer. Used connectors ran into the following probs:

Old Ranger plug (Z-20) Looking from four male plugs to right female plug)
    2 red wires,1 grn wire 1 yellow wire, 1 grn/brn wire,1 yellow /brn wire, 1 white(ground) wire.

    New plug (5 flat)
    1 blue wire,1 grn/brn wire (spliced together,1 yellow/brn wire(spliced together),1 white ground.

My Install: 2 red wires(old plug) spliced to blue wire new plug, yellow wire and yellow/brn(old plug) spliced to yellow/brn(new plug), green wire and grn/brn wire (old plug) to grn/brn (new plug) and white(old) to wht (new plug). Lit up trailer but turn signal in truck and trailer and brakes lights work improperly...

Need help?? Did I splice to many wires???Is this right plug??? Used heavy connectors and dialectic grease??? Trying to fish this weekend???

That's only 4 circuits. Normally you are going to have that green and yellow wire be totally separate for each brake/turn light, with two brown wires coming out for the marker/tail lights. The brown wires may have a yellow and/or green stripe on them to show which side of the trailer they feed.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
    nothing else matters.

Re: Installing new trailer plug..Project from Hell (noenvybu)

I replaced my trailer plug with a 7 way to match my hitch outlet (orginally for a RV trailer with brakes). Did this on all my trailers, even the 4 wire one. Got tired of using adaptors that wanted to wiggle loose.

I ran into similar issues with non-standard color codes. Ended up taking a meter and figuring out the "pin out" for both the truck and the trailers. It was a breeze after that. You may end up doing something similar.

On the truck, it was easy, but you have to use a battery to ID the light circuits on the trailer using jumpers. Once you figure it out, make sure to write it down and keep it for later reference so you don't have to do it again if you need to trouble shoot a problem.
