    Bearing grease/seal question

I've never changed or serviced my own bearings or seals, so I don't know what a properly maintained/serviced bearing/hub looks like.

I had my auto mechanic (I trust him) look at the bearings this spring. He said both had water in them, and recommended changing the bearings and seals. I had that work done, at a reasonable price.

But today I checked my tire pressure, and I happened to notice a whole lot of grease on the inside of the wheel, so I got under and looked at the axle & hub. The whole thing was covered with grease, most looked black, and some with a greenish tint. Both sides were greasy, one worse than the other.

Is this normal, or do I have a problem? Please understand, I don't know on what part of the hub a grease seal is supposed to go, or exactly what it is supposed to do.

I plan on calling the mechanic tomorrow. Am I barking up the right tree?

Re: Bearing grease/seal question (Paul From Minnesota)

give him a call. the grease is suppossed to be inside the hubs, not outside. it may have been as simple as overfilling the hub and it blew out or something not installed right.

i bet hes tired of seeing your boat pull up, though.

sounds like they were over-greased and the seals blew out. seals cost me $6 at napa when i did my bearings about a month back and they are very easy to replace.

That's what they're saying happened. Got it fixed for free.
