Problem with '97 175 Evinrude Intruder

Weird problem , my buddies Evinrude has been serviced 3 times and they still can't find the problem. The carbs have been cleaned and the motor runs well in the tank at the shop, but when you get it out on the water it is a different story. It starts right up first thing in the morning and you can run it to your first spot. Once it sits for a while, it will sometimes not start right a way and when it does start it sputters and doesn't run right. Anyone have any ideas? List of things to check?

Re: Problem with '97 175 Evinrude Intruder (Boat5)

First start of the AM and first run no problems,,go to take off to spot #2 and whoomp stalls and sputters? Since the e-10 fuels have hit the market this is a common malaise of the 60* motor. The gas in the vapor separator tank is cool and happy when the motor is chugging along until it is turned off. Then the heat from the motor is transferred to the VST and the water inside the fuel "boils" and creates an almost vapor lock condition. I have had pretty good success by applying a sheet of automotive heat reflecting material between the block and the VST assembly. I have also used a dremel tool and cut additional slits in the air ducts in the air inlets. The design of the cowl's air intake has the air going into the bottom of the motor with no real escape path so by adding additional vents, in theory it lets the heat of the motor out.
He can also try making this adjustment. http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id=357667
And if worse comes to worse try backing the idle adjustment jets out 1/2-3/4 turn CCW.

This is pretty common...I've dealt with it for two years and find that idling for a few minutes before shutting down often helps. Also seems to help to pump the bulb if it is really acting up.

Championman...any chance you could post a picture of the two modifications you have done. Particularly cutting the air vents out. I can't picture where you are making the cuts...

bump...this problem is driving me nuts and I'm really interested in hearing more about the air duct mod. You mention cutting 'additional' slits in the ducts, but I don't see any to begin with so I'm not sure I'm looking in the right spot. My ducts run a solid tube on both sides right down to the bottom of the cowling.

There are no slits to begin with, I think what Cman means is to add them at the top of the duct tubes so that the hot air in the cowl can escape out the added slits and out the intake scoops when motor is off while fishing cooling it down faster. I had this "Heat Soak" problem too, made all the adjustments, did'nt help much until I put a new needle and seat and reset the float level and drop in the Vapor Separator Tank (VST) and rebuilt the Vapor Pump, have not had this problem since.

Tbone, what exactly did you do to your VST and pump?

He basically rebuilt the VST, like doing a carb rebuild. Replaced the needle, seat and float and set the drop. Maybe a new gasket too. Then rebuild the pump on the tank. It is basically a 6 hp fuel pump.

I'm having the same exact issue....95' Evinrude Intruder.....starts great on a cold start....middle of day I go to run to another spot and it randomly won't start.

If I let it sit for another 10-15 min, I can get it started but it sounds weak. Then usually runs strong the rest of the day....

I spoke to my mechanic today he said to put it in neutral, give it choke and then start it. He said could be a vapor lock.

He also said to pump the bulb.

I hope this works the next time I have this issue.

Anyone else have any other advice for this issue?
