2005 Ranger Trailer Winch Change - Which Size

My buddy has a Ranger 175 VS on a Ranger Trailer with a regular Fulton 1500 lb winch assembly. He wants to change it out to one of the Fulton XLT series winch with the nice black plastic enclosure.
The Fulton XLT only comes in 1400 LB or 1800 LB

Would he be ok with a 1400 LB winch ?
