2 lower units in 2 months...???

    Fella's

I had my original lower unit go out about 2 months ago...reason unknown. the gears were just eattin up. swapped it out with another lower unit, same style(lightning lu), pulled the lower plug on it tonight and found alot of metal shavings on the magnet, and one bug chunk looks like a piece off the gear tooth. you guys got any idea why im chewing up lower units? i use the recommend gear lube, and all of the installs done by a BRP mech.

You need to make sure it is true and no bends. It is possible that the drive shaft may have a slight bend to it.

What was the story on the replacement case? New, used, or rebuilt?

Even if the case is opened and the gears look good, you're still getting a used case. There's no way to predict what a used gearcase is capable of doing. It's buying a "pig inna poke" every time. Sometimes you come out good, sometimes not.

i will tell you whats wrong... they are JUNK! JUNK JUNK JUNK, including myself, just the few guys i know that run e rudes have gone through i bet 10-12 gear cases in just the last year or two. i replaced mine july of 09, then it went again july of 10. you hit one or two times and they will go. guy accidently sat down in sand, bent his prop shaft and within a week it blew. buddy of mine has been running a bent shaft on his yammi for almost 4 months waiting for it to blow and it wont. they are just pieces of CRAP!

I just had the powerhead replaced at the begining of this year, could there have been something messed up in the drive gear when my mech. did the install on the powerhead? i have only put 4 hours on the motor since then and gone through 2 lower units...i dont want to put another lower unit on it and it do the same thing again a month down the road

Powerhead replacement is usually a bolt up operation that would unlikely be the cause of your lower unit failures. I tend to think the used unit you installed was on it's last goaround and it was just time for it to go. One possible thought is the propshaft was bent perhaps the last time it was used and no one realized it. This can create a short lived gearcase depending on several various situations that may have been present. You've got a pretty serious engine on this boat. Have you considered a Magnum case?

I'm open for any suggestions. What is the difference in the lightning and the magnum?

The lightning case is merely a standard case, but has a bullet nose protruding in front and has a curve molded into the skeg creating "power steering". The magnum is 25% larger in size than the lightning and standard case with larger gears. Bearing sizes remained constant except for a design change for the reverse gear thrust bearing.

I see where brp was doing the swap for guys that have the 250's. Why aren't they doing this for the 225 guys? If they know they are faulty....

Well, it's not that they are faulty, their just faster. They figure the 225 guys are looking for the performance edge over the dependability factor. This is just an uneducated guess.

I think i would rather have the dependability factor at this point....

May want to call Riverside Marine in Little Rock AR and see if they have any. M2 is pretty new so rebuilt availability limited.
