Helpful hint for filling Oil Hubs

Changed out my oil with Royal Purple 50W this weekend. First hub - I got messy. I tried a funnel - no room for air to escape, and when the hubs "burbed" to get rid of the air, out came some oil too - over and over again.

Tried to pour slower - hands shaking... oil dribbling all over the place.

Finally had enough and started thinking of some way to fill them better. Came up with the solution....

A huge syringe. I had a couple laying around in the kitchen drawer that we use for injecting marinade in chicken, etc... (Tony Chachere's).

I took the needle part off and just used the plastic syringe. Worked great. I would pull the plunger out, put my finger on the outlet, and fill with oil. Put the plunger back in, shoot a bit of oil back into the quart bottle, and then fill the hubs via the fill hole.

Took about 2 1/2 filled syringes per hub. Finished the other 3 with very little mess or overflow / wasted oil.

    All the best,
    Glenn

Also, set the quart of oil out in the sun to warm up, the oil will flow better..

Great idea using a plastic ketsup bottle. Just keep it in the shop/garage and mark it as having oil in it. You wouldn't want your wife to see it and put it back in the refrigerator!

I had an empty oil can in the garage, the kind with a clear plastic hose and nozzle and a handle to pump the oil out. I keep my Royal Purple 50W oil in it all the time and use it to pump the oil into the hub.

Having said that, I think I like the plastic ketsup bottle even better. Now why didn't I think of that?

the ketchup bottle is a good idea, thats what we used at UFP, just dont squirt it too much , it causes air bubbles so, it will take time to let those bubbles out, you don't want air in the hub...
