Confused on what oil to use...

I've got a 1999 Johnson J225PXEEN and am wondering what is the best oil to use. I premix and have been just been using Quicksilvers Premium TCW3 Oil. I've seen a lot of different threads where people use different brands and get less smoke at start up and in general. I asked my mechanic and he said the Quicksilver is fine. I'm thinking of switching to XD-50. Will that cause less smoke and help maintain the engine longer or what do people recommend? I guess I'm confused on synthetic and semi-synthetic.

I would recommend the XD50 and if you wallet can stand it the XD100 is the absolute best for your motor.

If you have Quicksilver Premium Plus available to you in bulk vs. a BRP branded oil that would be a better choice than just the TCW-3. The Plus is a semi-synthetic blend. XD-50 is a better choice as it has a carbon killing additive in it Carb-X. The XD-50 is a semi-synthetic blend and for pre-mixing is more cost effective to run. As stated the XD-100 is a pure synthetic so it leaves no ash residue in the motor.

XD-50 will smoke less than the Merc Premium PLUS oil.

Do not use the inexpensive Merc (Quicksilver) Premium oil as it is not as good as their Premium PLUS lubricant.

Thanks all for the great info. I just looked at my Quicksilver container and it is just the Premium, NOT the Premium Plus. Looks like I've been using the wrong oil for the past couple of years.

I'll probably get tomatoes and eggs thrown at me for this post, but I have used Wal-Mart brand oil for years. Ran it in an old 85hp Johnson for the 11 years I owned it and it was running great the day I sold it. Still had 105-110 lbs. compression on all cylinders. The xd-50 or 100 may or may not be a better oil, but I'll continue to run Wal-Mart brand until I have an oil related breakdown. Oh, and I did a few de-carbs during those 11 years, and never had alot of carbon come out the exhaust.

I run penzoil sync from wally mart no problems at all no carbon build up
