    Trailer Drop Hitch....

Bought a new 2008 Tahoe and love the vehicle but GM sure didn't have a better idea when it comes to towing with this vehicle. Even though the Tahoe and Avalanche are built on the same chasis the trailering package is completely different (Avalanche is no problem as it comes out under the bumper). My hitch comes out of the rear bumper and is @23-24" above the ground. Problem is I can't tow anything level. What's the biggest drop made for a 2" receiver; and would something like a 12" drop (if available) be safe to tow with. All of the one's I've been able to find (including adjustable height one's) won't allow me the total drop I need for all my towing needs. Not a big fan of towing anything nose up. Thanks in advance.

I thought I would be on Easy Street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!

You don't need a 12" drop, that would put your tongue 10" off the ground. I would think a 4" drop will be fine, depending on what your trailer sits level at. Don't forget to figure 2 or 3 inches of suspension drop with the weight.

Oh yes I do (for all my trailering needs). I thought the same thing but the Tahoe has an off road Z71 package and doesn't sink down that much when the trailer is attached. Maybe the tongue of the Ranger trailer is a little lower (to tow level) than some other makes, I don't know. I currently have an 8" drop for the boat which allows it to be towed level but for my other trailer (covered 8'x12') it rides way too high in the air. Thanks for your reply, appreciate it.

I have a 6" drop on my 07 4WD Tahoe and it works perfect for my new Cat but they did screw everything up when they put the hitch so high in the bumper.

I use a 10" drop draw tite solid ball mount for my 2500 ram. The ball mount is rated at 10,000 lbs without weight dist. Got mine locally at Lot-o-fun on US41 in Schererville, In.

For what its worth, Z71's are not any taller than normal 4wd models, the ride height is the same, contrary to popular belief. Also, the suspension sag will not be any different, as the spring rate of the coils are no different. With that said, the Z71 package is worth every penny. I've owned '99 and '05 Silverados, both with the Z71 package, and let me tell ya... the skid plates (that are included in the package) are a real lifesaver at times, if you venture very far off the beaten path.

Any truck accessory shop, especially offroad oriented shops, should carry ball mounts with adequate drop. Lots of people with that tow with lifted trucks need alot more drop than you, so finding a ball mount for your stock-height Tahoe should not be a problem.

    Re: Trailer Drop Hitch.... (Grant)

Decided to go with this hitch. It's a Putnam Saddle Style Adjustable Ball Mount and has a maximum drop of 11.5" and will take care of all my trailering needs without having 3 or 4 different hitches with various drops.

    Thanks to all who responded!
