Hot Hubs...

I am having issues with my front axle hubs on my tandem trailer heating up...

I have surge brakes on the front axles, Bearing buddy grease points on the hubs. Today I drove 20 miles from the lake to drop my buddy off...all hubs were cool. Drove another 2 miles, and one had blown grease all over and was too hot to touch.

I had to hit the brakes hard once in those 2 miles due to a light the turned on me. Could that be heating up the hubs enough to blow the grease?

Just hitting the brakes will not heat the hubs up that much if everything is working correctly. It sounds like the brakes are sticking. If both are hot, the problem could be the master cylinder. If only one hub is hot, it is probably the caliper (disc brakes) or wheel cylinder (drum brakes) for that wheel that is sticking.

What brand of actuator do you have?...do you have a swing tongue?...

I think it is my brakes on that side. I am not losing fluid so I don't feel that the master cylinder is leaking...I greased the moving parts on the surge brakes at the tongue and will see if that helps them release properly...if not gotta pull the bearings to get the drum off...so I will do that next and redo the brakes.
