Whats Easier to Back Up: Single or Dual Axle

I am looking into getting a new boat but have never towed bass boat on a dual axle trailer. I know a single axle will be easier to manipulate shaper turns when backing up but can sometimes get a little side to side when back up straight, but is a dual axle trailer easier to keep in a straight line when backing up due to the dual axle keeping it more inline. An do you find it difficult to backup down curvy ramps. Only ask cause I have never had a dual axle trailer. Thanks guys.

I think a single is harder to back up as it does turn easier, which makes it great for moving around by hand in the garage. I just like a dual for the safety factor of one more axle, and 2 more tires. You need to look at how far you plan to tow, and the weight of the boat. I don't think backing up should be your major factor in the choice of a single or dual axle trailer.

I always thought a tandem axle is easier to back-up for the simple reason, the trailer doesn't react as fast as the single axle.

No difference if the axle/pivot point is the same distance from the hitch ball, Unless your doing it by hand... Then the tandem will scrub the tires making it very hard to turn... This is why I went with a single axle on my 22 fter. It needs to go right into the corner for me to be able to get it in there.

Did ya know that a tandem trailer will wear the tires out faster than a single, even if they are all at max air?

In my experience, a tandem axle trailer is easier to back up.

I see no difference. My boat has a tandem trailer but the boats I use at work are single axle trailers so I switch between the both daily as long as you know how to back up there should be no problem. I would not trade my tandem for a single they ride so much better down the road.

Nope, to me, a tandem is easier because it doesn't make moves as easy, so you're not constantly correcting.

I was gonna say the same thing, if you are really good backing up a trailer you probably wouldnt' notice the trailer getting out of control anyways. So for somebody who is good at backing a tandem would just cause problems when you are trying to jacknife it.

Where I live I need a single axle so I can maneuver it around stuff, I saw a guy almost snap an axle trying to back a boat tandem trailer into a tight spot.

I only have one arm, and it's usually holding my beer, so my knees do it all

I think the length makes a difference also. But I would also say a Tandem is easier. I hate helping non boaters with single axle trailers, makes me look like a newb on the ramp when backing those trailers up.

Re: Whats Easier to Back Up: Single or Dual Axle (BMCD)

My 18 ft Stratos had a single, just traded it this weekend for my 21 ft Skeeter which has a tandem. I quickly noticed you get a much smoother ride going down the road from the tandem. Hit a bump with the single and the truck bounces for a 1/4 mile, with the tandem it bounces once and its done. I didnt notice any difference backing up.
