    Hog hunting ethics

I haven't hunted in about 20 years and have been pretty removed from the whole experience, so I thought I would ask you folks for an opinion. Hogs are considered a nuisance here in Florida and there are no closed seasons or limits.

Is it considered ethical to kill a hog and not keep the meat?

Around here they butcher and give the meat to food banks and soup kitchens. I have heard of people burning them in piles, because they kill too many. I think since it is edible meat, unlike coyotes and some other nuisance animals, you should eat it or give it to someone who will. However, I believe if you are kill a dozen every day on big farms then eat or give away what you can and burn the rest. I know of farmers who are losing lots of crops and money due to damage so they have a huge number of hogs, and therefore they are killing way more than they can eat. If you are only going hunting just to kill one then eat it, or don't go killing just to kill.

there is a fine line in that issue. In the summer, I think it is unsafe for human consumption due to disease or bacteria to eat the meat of ferrel hogs. However, in the winter and fall it is much safer. so it becomes more a safety issue than anything. when hunting in alaska, we wont eat the black bears because they get rickets from the raw fish they eat. you can only skin their hides...hope that helps you out.

    Olebiker,

This is straight out of the Arkansas Game and Fish website:

    On Wildlife Management Areas:
Hunters may kill feral hogs on WMAs during daylight hours during any open hunting season. They must use a weapon that is legal for that season.

During special WMA permit hunts, only permit holders may be on the WMA.
Feral hogs killed on WMAs can be taken for processing or left where they were shot.
Hunters may not use dogs, bait or traps to hunt feral hogs on WMAs.
Hunters may not hunt hogs at night on WMAs.

    They just want them dead...

We have to waste them here in Texas. There's so many there's not much choice. A person can sell hunts give away hogs whatever. It doesn't seem to slow them down. 2 years ago we killed 71 off my ranch and could have killed a hundred easy. We just got tired of killing them. We used what we could and gave away what we could, the rest went into the bone pile. Most of the time what went into the bone pile was the larger hogs that are not very good to eat. I kina look at it like people that shoot varmits, they don't eat them. A hog has turned into a varmit here in Texas. We've had a lot of rain this year and I fear the hogs numbers are going to be bad this year. We only killed 38 last year and I fear that when we crank up the corn feeders for our deer, It's going to be hog heaven.

Hogs have become as big a nuisance here in South East Texas as any other varmint species. We kill and east most of what we shoot during the winter months but if you kill a mature boar (150lb +) you might as well drag him to the creek, the meat stinks to high heaven even with a head shot and cutting. For years everyone loved to hog hunt and didnt want anyone to kill the hogs from there deer stands, now that has come down on us big time. I watched a group of 42 hogs come down the pipeline last year from a 1000 yards out sucking the corn up at every feeder they passed, once they got in range I was able to take out 2 300lb + boars that I drug off and 1 nice 100lb sow that I skinned and ate. All in all we killed over 40 hogs last season and we didnt even put a dent in there numbers. I will be taking to the woods with my AR this year to try and thin the numbers down, unfortunatly all we will be able to do is hold the growth in check, they just breed to fast.

hunting in the st johns county area of FL (. the birthplace to this hog problem ) i have no qualms about shooting any boar over 125 lbs or so and letting the buzzards eat him . i try to take as many sows as possible during the cooler months.. they really are good eatin....most of the farmers around here have crop degradation 'gun and light ' permits that allow them to shoot them at night..personally, i wont waste edible meat if at all possible

Fortunately, we don't have hogs where I hunt, although i have always wanted to kill one and hunt them....just not on my property....lol.....but I can tell you IMO, if we ever do get them, I will shoot every one I see...if that means I can eat them all, then great...I love wild hog....but if I can't do anything with them, I am still gonna blast them...they are such a detriment to the habitat and wildlife on the property....and I consider myself a very ethical hunter...I haven't shot on a buck in a few years because I haven't seen anything big enough to shoot at...
