    Duck Hunting Gun set up.

Hey all you duck hunters. I have been expiramenting with what shot I am using for Duck and goose hunting. So I wanted to see what all you fellow BBCer's were using.

I use a remington 870 express with 3" steel magnums and a modified choke.
I am now using a BB with a BBB as my third shot usually.

I used to shoot 2's followed by a BB as my third.

What do you all use for a good duck/goose combo for decoy hunting?

I use the same set up you have, 870 express mag, modified and I've killed geese with #4's before. I would go with 4's then to 2's. You hit a duck with BB's and he ain't gonna be worth eatin. Just my .02

+1 I would use 3's for ducks at the biggest. I use a Beretta Xtrema2

I shoot a SBE with 3.5" BB's for ducks, sometimes I shoot 2's if I know we are only goin to kill ducks. I use bb's for about everything anymore. Federal seems to have the best shells if you can find then, if not I use the winchester Hv shells.

I am shooting an 870 as well but with an IC choke 90% of the time. the majority of our goose shooting is at 20 yards over decoys and I find that Kent Faststeel 2's or BB's suit this setup very well with very few cripples. If I am on the edge of the spread and looking to shoot cripples the clients leave I step up the 3 1/2" Federal Black Cloud in BB with a mod choke. I don't recommend this setup as it beats the chit out of your shoulder with a pump gun. If you are going to shoot 3 1/2" magnums I highly recommend one of the new Benellis with the recoil suppression system or at least an auto loader of some type. We have shot quite a few ducks with BB's and while they can be a little holey they are still quite eatable.

After tons of patterning and trying different loads over the years I have found the best for me is a cylinder or Improved choke with 3inch #4's works best over decoys. When goose hunting I go to a mod choke with #2 tungsten.

Benelli SBE II with 3" #2 or #4 for ducks and BB for geese, improved choke.

Re: Duck Hunting Gun set up. (dragracenova)

    Winchester Supremes 3" # 3's in 12 ga. 1 1/4 oz shot at 1450fps.
Works well in the timber and ricefields. I used them for about 10 years. I never found anything better. Hard hitting load, at a good price. I find the shot to be a little more consistant in roundness than the Kent loads.

My "GoTo" duck gun for the past 6-7 years though is a Benelli 20 ga with
3" Hevishot in #6's. Greenheads "FEAR" it!!!

I've been using a lot of different stuff this season and think I've settled on 3" Kent Fasteel #2's with my SBE II with factory Mod. choke for ducks.

11-87 here. Patternmaster extended long range choke tube with winchester expert high velocity #2's for duck and bb's for geese.

I really like the black cloud, but with a long range choke shooting at ducks at 30 yards away at the most( most about 20) it kills em pretty dead.

If you cut one of those Winchester HV's open you'll see why they are cheap. The shot sucks in them. The kent and estate shells have some good clean shot in them. Only bad thing about estates is you don't want to get them wet!

    Anyways, I shoot a Benelli M2 and patternmaster, with 3in. #2 Estates.

Re: Duck Hunting Gun set up. (skinitback)

    remington 11-87
3" winchester hv 2 shot for duck
3" winchester hv BB shot for goose!

Shot 4s for a little bit when duck hunting but then i realized well when a random goose comes around a 4 aint a good thing to have in your gun and i actually came to find out i like the 2s better.

Usually use a modified but my remington only has a full in steel so i get ballsy and use that cause using my nova is no fun shootin ducks!!!

Re: Duck Hunting Gun set up. (DJ13)

I shoot a Benelli Super Black Eagle

    Kicks High Flyer Full Choke

3.5" Winchester Xpert 1550 fps 1 3/8 oz. BB (the most economical, and for good reason - usually go through two or three cases a season)

On days of extreme rain, I will take a box of Drylok with me instead of the Xperts, since the Xperts are not waterproof.

I shoot BB's for everything, unless I know I'm going to be shooting at divers (like on Barkley Lake), at which point I change to 2's, but anytime else it's BB's.

For me, shooting BBs in my set up kills more ducks than crippling them. The way I see it, one big rock hurts more than two or three smaller ones. Throughout the course of my 10 seasons of hunting, I've experimented with all different sizes, and my results all point to BBs being the best, with the exception of divers.

As for the choke, it's all that I use. I can pick off ducks at 50 yards with ease...and have pulled off some amazing long range shots that were probably over 80 yards. It's the best all around choke I've found, with one exception - if the ducks are closer than 20 yards, you gotta wait until they get out from ya a bit, or you'll explode them! In other words, wait and let your buddies miss their first or second shot, and then start dropping them and be the hero!

Browning Gold Hunter 3 1/2". Normally use Federal 3" #4's, and Black Cloud 3 1/2" # 4's when they aren't getting as close. You can't beat the Black Cloud.!!!!!!!

Same here, except, I use the winchester HV rounds in the black hulls, or federal HV rounds. I prefer Federals if I can find them. My Benneli is Ported so I cant use the black cloud Ammo with that or the Kicks Tube. BB's are definatley the way to go!!!!! We dont gewt to many in your face shots like you guys in the Good duck states to use 3's and 4's.
