grunt/ bleat/ wheeze ? and rattle?

I typically use a grunt in the early season to attract a deer (hopefully a buck) I cannot see. Or use it to get a passing deers attention. A bleat any time during the day when it gets slow, and rattle only early in the season. I am not sure if what I do is right, but wanted to know what and when everyone else uses these?

I think calls are a matter of timing. I like tickling horns pre-rut, grunting before and during and scents when the bucks start searching. One time you may grunt or rattle and not even get a look while another he will come on a rope. let the deer tell you what mood they are in, don't over-use them and you will sooner or later get a response. I have had great success of late with the Primos "The Can", it definitely gets their attention. Good luck.

I use a great big pile of apples it seems to work really well Then after a buck starts to eat the apples I grunt at him with my grunt call just to aggravate him
a while before I shoot him

The great big pile of apples will get you a great big fine and possible jailtime here this year in Michigan. Statewide no baiting of any kind.

I am a big fan of the grunt call. I've grunted in a lot of bucks in the past. The two occasions I remember the best were both 8-points that came in to fight. Watched both of them for about 20 minutes before the shot. They were trashing little trees and bushes and came stomping in like they owned the place........

On two separate occasions, I've brought mature does back to me with a grunt. I spooked one of them when I woke up , and the other when I drew my bow. Both of them ran off flagging, but came back when I grunted. Both went in the freezer.

I will say that there is definitely a period when grunting works best. Right now is very pre-rut and the deer are paying no attention to grunt calls. I grunted at 5 over the weekend, and none of them even showed the slightest interest. Give them about 2 more weeks, and it will be on........

I try rattling every year, but have had no success to date. Don't know if I am going about it wrong, or if it's just not a good technique here. We have a very high doe to buck ratio (25-35:1), so that may play into the picture. Seems like if grunting would bring a mature buck in then rattling would as well...........

I've tried "the can" , wheeze calls, and most every other call on the market. Can't say that I believe any of them has helped me. It might be that I don't have confidence in them (kinda like jig fishing). I suppose I oughta drag a few of them out and try them again this year.

I've never had sucess rattling in big bucks - only smaller ones.

I have had HUGE sucess with the can call - brought my big buck in and he's now hanging on the wall.

Most of the time though - good scouting and knowing where to sit and sitting QUIETLY works the best for me.

I've got a buddy that is always asking me how I keep getting nice bucks and how I always see so many deer- and I just look at him and laugh.

This coming from a guy that takes a gameboy into the woods with him to help him concentrate on something so he can sit still........

I rattled this buck up about 15minutes after settling in my stand



It's all about time of the season to me...early ticking works...pre rut/rut/post rut some good crashing and banging will work...after that I put the horns up...

I know everyone works the wind, but if you plan to rattle...you had better pay even more attention to it...you may think it's not working...but in reality, you may just be getting busted and not know it!

I only bow hunt - so I need to get them in just a tad closer.........

I shot that buck at 36yrds jackazz!!...The furthest I've ever killed a deer would be 74yrds!...most are 8-40yrd shots!....with the lower being the norm!

I like to play "how close can you get" twice I've had a fox within 5' of me while sitting on the ground...had one lift his leg and whizz on a bush my foot was under!!..little bastage!

So a gun has nothing to do with it!

Little know secret here folks, The Snort and Weeze is the most deadly call in the woods. Without a doubt i have turned more bucks in more states with this call than any other. I have even turned several away from chasing a doe, and had them walk within 20-40 yards. The key here is if you are in an open area(even medium dense hardwoods) and are doin this too a 3+ year old buck, he will EXPECT too see another deer before he closes the distance to within bow range in most cases. Same goes for a Grunt call. The older bucks are very wary when it comes too wanting too see a rival. I could go on for an hour on this subject but it gives you a starting point.

What I do is do a grunt/rattle combination about every hour. During early season and before the rut, be soft with the rattling and light on the grunting. But once rut hits hammer on those antlers, just keep your eyes open cause there is a very good chance something is around that time of the year. I hunt over a cut bean field most of the time and once I see a good buck out there during the rut I hit the grunt call two times about 3 seconds apart and if he is curious he will bee-line to you, if he's not then you might as well sit and watch.

I have never had any luck rattling but the grunt call is another story. I have had bucks come to my grunt call with their ears laid back and the hair on there necks standing up. I have grunted in up to three does at one time and called back a button buck five times just for fun. I don't go to the woods with out my grunt tube. I have never had a deer run away when I grunt but some just kept on doing what they were doing and paid me no never mind.
