    Engine Hours Help

I have an 08 Triton 18explorer with the Mercury 90ELPTO. The dealer said to take it easy on the engine during the "break in" period for the first 10 hours. What exacly is "take it easy"? How high on the RPM's can I run during this period and where can I find the hours on the engine?

There should be a section in your service manual that takes care of it. If you don't have a service manual, I would make sure your dealer told you what the break in period is. Given you have a 2008 boat, assuming you also have a 2008 motor, last thing you need is to not understand or follow the break in period and then have a problem with your warranty.

Others may be along to help you better than me. You may also want to post this in the Mercury forum as I suspect they have some certified mechanics who help others out frequently on that site.

    Good luck.

Yep, the service book should cover exactly what to do and how long to do it. For example my opti required you to run at a given rpm for a set time. Then vary the rpm for a set time, etc, etc.

Some will say you don't need to follow this, but... the engine computer generally records what is happening with the engine. If some warranty issue comes up and you didn't follow the breakin procedure you could be in a tough spot.

If you don't have the engine service book your dealer should provide one. It will be the longest 10hrs of your boating life.

my 08 90 elpto said the only break in was to run the 1st tank with oil mixed in the fuel, then after that, just straight gas.

didn't really say anything about taking it easy
