    merc idle/timing screws

good morning,a few days ago i installed an t-h marine hot foot pro with a three feet longer throttle cable.i hooked up flush device to test it out and the rpms were high,so i called local marina and they told me to set the screws[the ones with plastic caps on the ends]to where they touch outboard,so i did and still same thing.come to find out the cotter pin was snagging spring preventing the hot foot to return to idle.i called marina to tell them this and asked if they knew where to set the screws to original setting and they didn't. the motor is a 2004 mercury 150 xr-6. i really love to fish but i don't want to get on the water and have something mess up because these screws aren't adjusted right.your help is truly appreciated.

What you'll want to do is pull the cowl and air box so you can see the throttle blades. Disconnect your Hot Foot and see if the throttle blades are fully closed and then reference that (if they are closed) back to the throttle stop screw on the side of the motor. With your water supply hooked up, fire up the motor, let it idle for awhile so RPM's will stabilize and then make your IDLE RPM adjustment with the lower screw. Once your done with that, turn off the motor, hook up your Hot Foot again, with the motor off depress the Hot Foot and release it again, now start your motor testing your Hot Foot by lightly giving it a "LITTLE" shot of gas and see if it returns back to your set idle RPM's. If it's still higher than you set it, reach down and pull the Hot Foot back towards you, if the idle goes down you may have a couple more things to look at and adjust:
    1. Spring tension on the Hot Foot may need to be tightened
    2. Throttle cable even though new, hanging up or causing some additional drag.

Good luck, this is one project you want to make sure is perfectly safe to use !!!!!

It depends on which screws you adjusted...If you moved the upper screw that adjusts the timing arm, you will need to reset the timing...You should get a manual and go thru all of the link&sync procedure to be sure...You should probably post this in the Mercury forum and someone may have the instructions for you...
