    Older-motor vs newer motor

This the place for this question, I have an old 1982 175 merc on my Ranger,I am considering repowering, seems to be a lot of 150 hp available in used market, what would I compare my motor to in todays hp ratings 150-135? Will probably get 175 1998 or newer, but I am just looking for opinions, Thanks

IMO I would just get another 175 and keep the hull maxed out. You can always pull back on the throttle if it is too much. If there is such a thing as too much!!!

My tx partner just repowered with a 135 opti and paid more than a 150 opti due to the 135 being more rare. His hull is only rated to 135hp. Funny thing is the opti 135hp and 150hp, the only difference is the ECM, from what I heard anyways. I think you will be presently surprised with a newer 175hp. I know I will be when I update myself!

    Just my .02 worth.

I believe that your 82 175 is rated at the powerhead, not at the propshaft loke a modern engine. If that is truly the case then a newer 150(1990 and up) would put out about the same hp as your 175. I know they will be more fuel efficient.

DO NOT BUY A FICHT!!!!!!! they are no good. If you have to buy a direct injection motor, buy something later model. They never got the bugs worked out of the ficht motors. They bankrupted OMC.

Thanks for response, will check again. I have been really happy with my 1982 merc,no problems ,second owner for 6 years, but I know something has to give sooner or later, plus there is always that need for speed,K

I had a 1980 mercury 150 on a ranger. 58-59 mph. Put a 2002 yamaha vmax on and results, 60 mph. I did not see a big difference in performance, i'm sure an xr6 would have been a little more difference but it is what it is.
