I'm looking at a 98 Ranger with a 01 225 Merc with about 40 hours on it. A buddy told me that it sounded great except that the optimax in those years were dubbed the Opti-pop because the powerhead would (not could) go at anytime. Of course he is an Evinrude guy, but has anybody else heard anything like this?
head down to the mercury forum. You will get good advise on this motor there. I do believe if not properly warmed up that they did suffer some piston seizing problems, but other then that cannot recall anything horrible. Sherm in the merc forum or any of the guys should help you out with more accurate information.Welcome to BBC too
