    big johnson carb question

on my 72 50 hawse I cleaned the carbs and didn't pay any attention to how the throttle plate came out- does the square cutout go on the bottom or the top? I figured it went on the bottom like most but it don't fit as well that way. shouldn't have done both at once

Man, this is a good question, I am not sure but I think it goes up?????

For anyone reading this, do not remove the throttle plates when rebuilding carbs.

only remove throttle shafts when you gotta replace the spring or boiling it out when it's been sitting up for 20 yrs- I had both reasons

I have seen to many of the screws break off when trying to remove them.

Just use a Good spray cleaner.

On the spring replacement, that's about the only way to change it.

yeah I done did it. made sure the screws were good and clean and oiled. it would suck to break one those out of round shafts will cause some erratic leaning that's hard to find too so I like to look at the chrome and measure the shafts good on a rig that's gonna have alot of gremlins anyway just to eliminate a few as I go

Those throttle screws are "staked" at the factory so they won't come out, so unless you ground off the ends first, the threads in your brass throttle shaft may be ruined. If not, I can get you the part number of the screws tonite. They are NOT in any parts books.

The flat area of the throttle plate normally goes where the idle calibration holes are drilled in the carb body. The throttle plates also have a 15 degree bevel on the edges so they "seal" against the carb walls when closed.

    Good luck.

Best I can tell is the square goes up, you can get the screws #312852 but the throttle shaft isn't avialable any longer if you can find one I show # 384731. CM
