Here is a trip from a few days ago. Reading your screen where turnover is occuring can be a challenge. I finally have found a small pro to down imaging. Most of you know that I'm gung ho Side Imaging and rarely use DI. Actually if your strong at your sonar it's really not an advantage but it's a good learning tool to help you learn and read your sonar.
The 45 degree horizontal lines are turnover bubbles rising to the surface. Everything else is fish. Do you see the fish?
Do they stand out better here?
Here tho lies the problem with DI..
In the above picture I can see the Fish on DI but it's useless info to me if I can't determine where the fish are in relation to the boat as they don't show up on the sonar portion.... From this image I have no clue where the fish are in relation to the boat other than they aren't directly in the sonar cone.. So essentially I'm pissing in the wind here as my spoon isn't in the strike zone where it needs to be.
That is until I switch to seek and destroy mode. Now I have something to work with as SI portion tells me they are on the right side of the boat. Now I have narrowed down their location. I know they are at the bottom up to about 5ft off the bottom. Pitch the spoon behind the boat slightly and jig in 5ft intervals to connect with the school.
Here are just some other miscellaneous shots that I took. To me the easy part is reading the sonar. Finding these gem schools is by far the hardest part of vertical fishing.
This image shows how you get better bottom seperation using DI mode. But someone with experience will know from looking at that sonar shot that those are no doubt fish. Again Di is a great learning tool to help you with your sonar interpretation.. In case your wondering these were mostly spots in the 1 to 2lb range. Few white bass in the mix as well. Got one largemouth. IN about an hour I had about 30 fish. YOu find the right school you can load up in a hurry.
