How to tell the shaft length of an outboard without disassembly

I have a 1998 evinrude vindicator 200hp on my bassboat and need to replace lower unit. My question is what is the shaft length and how do you tell the length without removing the lower unit. All I see that may indicate is 'stl' in the vin#

If you can post the model number we can tell you what shaft length you have.

    My motor is
    1998 200 Vindicator
    Model# E200 STLECE
    Serial# G 04529446

That is about all the info I can come up with on this motor.
Hopefully this is enough to tell the lower unit shaft length.

    Thanks!

The "L" in the model number (ST-L-CE) means long shaft...20 inch.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks a million - I miss having a 100% working lower unit. The current one is sucking in water and has no reverse

Is there any chance that you would know if a 20 inch lower unit from a 1997 evinrude intruder (The Model #E150GLEU ) will fit as a replacement 20 inch
lower unit on this 1998 vindicator?

The gearcase will work but you have to change the drive shaft and shift shaft from your old gearcase.
