    Painting aluminum siding?

Is it possible to repaint aluminum siding? This is my first house, and probably only be here another 1-2 years. I don't want to replace the siding, but the white paint on it is completely oxidized and faded and comes off easily. You can see the metal underneath in some places, it's so thin. And it you touch it, your hand comes back white. Just a fine white powder.

Figured renting an airless sprayer would be the best bet, but not sure how to prep the siding, or what type of paint would be best to use. Any suggestions from those with experience would be greatly appreciated.

Just pressure wash the siding, using caution not to spray up under the upper board. You might have to use a soft brush (like at the car wash) to remove the oxidation. Never use TSP for this, you can etch the windows, laundry detergent will help. The best coating to apply would be Sherwin Williams bond-plex for a primer but its quite pricey. Contractors cost is almost $50 a gallon. Then the final coat with Super paint. You can skip the bond-plex and just apply two coats of Acrylic. If you are wanting to apply dark colors, I would look at Porters top line Acrylic. It will have a little better color rention over the years. I would use a satin finish, it will dull out in several months.
You can get into trouble with an airless real quick, be very cautious with the wind direction. You will have to mask windows, Sherwin carries plastic in 400 foot rolls and get the smallest mills they have. Static will hold it to the windows for easier masking, and be sure to use the blue tape unless you want to scrape the tape off.

I dont know of the pressure of the pump you might be getting but a new 4/11 tip will save you paint. If you are getting spits, reduce the paint a little. Like I said, use caution with an airless. One quick psssst and you just metal flaked several cars. And doubtful your home owners will cover the buffing.
