    lower unit gear lub

Going to change lower unit oil, can't find Evinrude/Johnson oil in my area, can i use a different brand ? It's a 2008 E-Tec 150 HO, E150DHLSC, still under warranty!

BRP HPF XP is the preferred fluid for your gearcase. Next would be HPF Pro. You want at least a semi synthetic fluid in there. Pennzoil full synthetic fluid would be my back up choice. But BRP stuff is the best. Get 2 quarts.

I had a V-4 case on my V-6 for @ 10 years and never changed it. She made several trips to 104 M.P.H. and never complained once.

well i'm confused now, this is just the first full season i've used the E-TEC, just how how often should it be changed ? Other than making sure there's no water in gearcase, how long should the factory filled oil last ?

Evinrude says that the HPF-XR or HPF-Pro gear lube is good for 3 years or 300 hours. IF you run in saltwater, use the motor commercially, or high performance use, it should be serviced more often.

It's just like reading your car's manual concerning oil change intervals. It says to change more often with stop-go traffic, pulling a trailer, or extensive high speeds.

Royal Purple makes good products, as many other companies do, but you should use the traditional 1 year or 100 hr. intervals. If you are still in factory warranty, it's best to stick with factory lubes to be on the safe side as no optional lubes are published.
