2004 Evinrude 225 HO DI blown powerhead

I just blew my motor, only 200hrs and well maintained. Shop who diagnosed said they could'nt find any cause for the # 5 piston/ring/cylinder wall explosion. I'm in the process of deciding what to do.

Rebuilt with new powerhead (Through BRP) shop quote is $9,500.

Install after market rebuilt powerhead (suggestions)

Look for newer used etec (any suggestions on any 225 or 250's for sale)

    or
    Get a Merc.

    Thanks for any help!

The question is do I look for a used motor with low hours or rebuild the one I have with either a brp powerhead (expensive) or a less expensive rebuilt powerhead (such as blackbird)?

Do Not go with Blackbird. They have a bad bad bad bad reputation. You might want to look at Chris Carsons marine in Florida, just stay away from Blackbird!

Re: 2004 Evinrude 225 HO DI blown powerhead (Costa)

Buy running the HD100 I think you can rule out that your failure was due to an oil related problem. Unless the oil pump itself went out.

Virtually all mechanical items will fail at one time or another. Yes 200 hours is low and I would not have bet you would have any problems at all if the engine was taken care of as you say. But there are faulty internal parts which I am sure make their way into our engines. maybe that was your case or maybe it was the EMM as someone suggested.

As a owner of a 2002 225 HO I am certainly sorry for your problem. Mine is approaching 150 hours with no core engine issues.

My frustration is that there is no warning system built into these engines to warn owners when an injector goes bad and ends in a blown power head. These engines are designed and tuned right on the edge, so its no wonder that we have a percentage that have problems in all brands. (Evin, Merc, Etc) That being said, there are a very high percentage of engines out there with more years and hours still running strong. I will admit that the numbers of good running engines does not make you feel any better when a failure happens to you.

Sometimes I wish I had my 1985 150 XP Back. One hell of a motor!! Not sure if they would last long in todays world with Pee for gasoline. And that aspect of things is only going to get worse.

Thats scary!! My 03 has just over 200 hours and running strong. I'm not afraid to run downriver @ the Big G. With only one hole bad that would eliminate the oil, or the oil pump IMHO. Sometimes a ring or something just lets go. Unless under warranty, I would think the one hole could be fixed for a lot less $$....... The other holes with just over 200 hours can't be hurt..... again JMHO. Much luck in the repairs.

with the unexplained loss of #5 and all the problems that the emm cause on these motors. the two questions i would ask your self, is it worth taking a chance on a used motor or
is it worth the cost to rebuild what you have with the chance it will let go in a short period of time

Re: 2004 Evinrude 225 HO DI blown powerhead (rude power)

In follow up to my earlier post, It is very important to find out why the one cylinder went down so that that problem can be eliminated in the rebuild. I am sure the mods will agree. We have seen many on this site that again go down shortly after a rebuild because they did not get to the root problem.

Having said all that, one of the mods will have to comment on how easy or difficult it may be to track down the real cause of the failure.
