Changed the lower unit fluid for my first time today. All went pretty well. After I had some squirt out the top screw hole, went ahead and put that plug back in. As I was taking the lower pump adapter out of the bottom hole, I did have some lower unit fluid escape. Hard to judge how much.
Is there much margin of error here? Should I try to pump more in from the top hole to try and top it off? Havent ever done this before and sure don't want to screw it up.

Use something like a zip-ty as a dipstick and insert it into the top hole after the motor has been trimmed to level for a while. The oil should be within 1/2" of the top of the hole.
Use a clean pump type oil can to top off the oil level if needed through the upper vent hole

Steve, after oil comes out the top hole and I put the plug in, i'll give it a couple more pumps, cuz I know I'll lose some when putting the bottom plug in. Try Seahorses idea, and bend a zip ty at 1/2 " and stick it in the top hole after it's sit level for a while and see if it is full.

A couple more pumps will pressurize the gearcase and force out MORE oil when you go to put the drain plug in.
Better yet, fill until it comes out the vent, then wait a few minutes and fill some more. That allows the oil to work it way up through the pinion bearing and to fill the driveshaft cavity. Put the vent screw in and the vacuum will keep any significant amout of oil from running out.
Use one of those Quick-Wedge screwdrivers to hold the slotted drain screw with one hand as you remove the pump fitting with the other.
Use new #311598 washers under the screws unless you have the type with o-rings, then you will have to look up the part number yourself.

I stand corrected, altho I do usually stop when it comes out the top hole and give it a few then fill til it comes out again. I learn quick SH!
