While fishing yesterday my motor developed a progressively louder knocking at all RPMs in forward. After idling to the ramp, I noticed that it sounded normal in reverse. I then revved it to around 4500-5000 in neutral, and it sounded good.
Other than the noise, it starts, and seems to run fine, although it did feel like I had hit a log or 2x4 a couple of times before it reduced my speed to idle on the way back to the ramp. (I had actually hit nothing).
It seems to be using oil out of the separate tank, and is peeing just fine. I haven't had time to check the lower unit oil for shavings or chunks yet. I hope it is a gear or bearing, down there, rather than the power head.
Do any of you have any ideas or suggestions, before I search for a mechanic?
