How can I fix my minn kota trolling motor?

I have a minn kota trolling motor 44 pound thrust early 2000 model.
ok. what keeps the trolling motor from spinning out of controll?
my friend gave me this one so I am trying to fix it for as little as possible.
right now the steering shaft/tube housing at the (top) of the trolling moter right were the spring is sandwiched between the upper and lower brackets is very loose there is a spring sleeve at the top that has a nut switch mount on it (not sure what the nut switch mount is for)It's like the hole shaft needs to be compressed back together and the nut mount switch tightened back down.I tried to look it over good and did not see where anything was broke.I looked at the parts diagram for the minn kota maxxum and it looks like all the parts are still there exept the nut for the switcfh mount.not sure if it was on there when I got it.but when you look at it I can/t figure out what keeps the spring commpressed and from spinning out of control..Thanks for bearing with me.Please let me know if there is a quike fix.I heard the labor on fixing trolling motors is high.Thanks so much hope to here frome someone

Hit a stump one year while burning, which caused the motor to bend underneath the bow. Something popped....A part above the spring that was suppossed to be on the inside of the housing, was now on the outside. It didnt neccessarily look broken, but sure acted like it. Like you say, it looked like i could just take it apart and put it back together or compress it, and I tried with no luck.


Motor would rotate violently and uncontrolled. No amount of cheap fix or jerry rigging would work and had to take it in to get some new parts and have it all compressed back together. $200ish if I remember correctly
