backing up w/ 4 prong on a 5 prong trailer

if you have a new boat w/ the 5 plug trailer w/ brakes and an older vehicle that is wired for 4 prong, you know you cant back up ur trailer because there is nothing to disconnect the brakes. easy trick just turn the trailer plug over on the adpter and turn on you lights. the lights send power to the back ups and the brakes are released.

For less than $10 you can buy an adapter.

Advanced Auto is where I got mine. You have to buy a little splice "thingy"(can't think of its name). With it you find your reverse light wire behind your taillight and it cuts into both of them creating a circuit. The guy at NAPA just gave it to me.

    Hope this helps

Suitcase connector is the name you are looking for.

If you have the 7-pin round connector on your truck, you can buy and adaptor that has both 4 and 5-flat connectors. That's what I use for mine.

    4 Way Flat Connector

The connector I have on my truck now has 3 female and 1 male and its flat. We are a boat with 5 way connector and I guess it has something to do with the brakes. What is the best solution to remedy the problem?

(in simple terms) yep the 5th is for releasing the brakes so you can back boat trailer up.
you can splice into the trucks back up lights and wire in a flat five at the truck.
a flat five pig tail is under $10.00. u will also need some quick connects to splice in the back up light wires and about 20 minutes to install.
if you dont mind getting in and out to back up boat, unplug the connector and flip it over, replug it in and turn on ur light so you can back up.

    Re: backing up w/ 4 prong on a 5 prong trailer (03 tr20)

Just an FYI. I don't know what you drive but on older Fords with 7 pin round from factory, the center pin is an auxillary and NOT wired in.. The 7 round to 5 flat adapter feeds off the center pin for reverse brake disengage. If you have this set up, find the yellow (changes to solid red after the first pig tail) coming off the back of the plug. Trace it up to the closet tail light, and jumper from the reverse wire to the center pin wire you traced out. Should take about 20 minutes.

Not with my brakes. You will smoke off all 4 tires.. And prolly bend the tongue of the trailer.

Sorry for the question but I cannot picture how flipping the plug will work because the ground does not connect ... unless the ground is using the trailer ball and hitch.

Re: backing up w/ 4 prong on a 5 prong trailer (Wormweight)

I've pulled my boat without the reverse lights with no issues. All you have to do is let gravity take you down the ramp. With the trailer going down the ramp, it would take A LOT of speed and force to get the surge brakes to engage. Just take it slow down the ramp and you won't have any trouble.

Now, backing up on a flat surface would be a little different but down the ramp shouldn't be any trouble.

yes wormweight, the trailer grounds thru the hitch. you just need to turn ur light on to de-activate the brakes
