    Fish Culling System

    Hey Guys,

Just curious as to what culling/tagging system most of you use OR if any of you have come up with something interesting yourselves?

I have only been using the "clips" that attach to the lip of a fish. I find more times than not they come unclipped especially if the fish decides to make a round trip of the livewell. Then if i go to cull its like, well which one goes with which, and it defeats the purpose.

I have been trying to stay away from the metal clips that actually puncture the fishes lip and clips on. Now, something like this is foolproof for coming off. But im partial to the idea of punching a whole in the fish to tag it.

What do you guys find to be the best?

    Thanks in advance!

I've been having the same problem with my colored fish markers coming unclipped. I'm going to buy some shower curtain hangers to use on my fish. 90 % of the fish I catch have already got holes in their mouths. So I won't be adding any more to them by using the metal hangers.

I know you don't want to punch holes but it's your best option. I went & bought one of those cheap 99cent metal clip stringers & put those clips on my culling tags. I can now grab the float & pull the fish out with no worries.

I have the clips from Cul-M-Rite, but not the life tag ones.

Those actually tend to scare me even more than the whole through the lip. The Life Tags are suppose to go back by the gills, correct?

SAMPO makes a nice stringer that I use. I remove all the PLASTIC retainers from the stringer and attach a piece of different colored silicone tubing to the retainers with a tie wrap. You can get a myriad of colors from a good hobby shop. The silicone tubing is used for fuel lines in R/C planes, boats and cars.

Then a plain piece of HDPE (high density polyethelyne) with a china marker to write down the weights. The most expensive part of the system is the tubing, but you can find it on sale too.

I use the culling kit from texastackle.com
I simply sharpened the clip ends so that they have a point on them (easer to clip on the fish with)

I took this same system and replaced the plastic clips with the metal stringer hooks. I think it is ok to put a small hole in the fish's mouth for culling since I just yanked him around the lake by his jaw already and partially suffocated him when I pulled him out of the water to remove the lure/bait. You can also sharpen the tips like a hook so they are easier to push through.

I have the berkley system but added the clips from a metal stringer so they would actually punch a hole in the fishes lip to hold it on so they don't shake them off

I use the XTools tags and replace the clips with metal clips off of a stringer. I like the numbers better than colors. I do not put the tags on the fish until I catch a limit then I use my two culling beams to put the fish in order from 1 (smallest) to 5 (largest). However, if it is a fish I know I will not likely cull, I do not put the clip in its mouth. I don't believe the holes heal. I always think it is crazy when I see someone put a culling ring in a 5lb'er.

    Re: (Cody87)

I have used the colored diaper pins for 18 years. Big metal pins or floats really stress a fish out. It might not die before weigh-in but it will take a lot out of a fish. The diaper pins fairly easy to see in the livewell without having to take the fish out but the fish doesn't have to keep it's mouth open and stress it like a lot of the other items.

diaper pins with colored string from a craft store work the best for me. the diaper pin is a small needsize hole and the fish do not have the added stress of a float pulling on them all day
