My TOTM....Upgrading to a better Trolling Motor Pull Cord

    Hey Guys,

Within the last two years, my trolling motor cord snapped more than three times on the water....leaving me to have to waste time on the water fixing it. I got an idea to make a trolling motor pull cord that won't fray, and is easier to lift the motor up and down.

I took a regular nylon cord that I found at Home Depot, and threaded it through 1/4" vinal tubing, which can also be found at home depot. I attached the cord to the handle, and the safety clip that holds the motor in place. This is what I got:

Here is an upclose pic of the safetly clip attatchment.

There is my solution to keeping trolling motor pull cords from fraying....all for about $5 . You can also slip the 1/4" vinal tubing over your trolling motor cord that came stock with the motor.

To make the motor even easier to to pull up and down, spary a little WD-40 on the parts where the cord will touch while the motor is deployed, and where the braket hinges are.

    CJ

Put airplane cable on mine three years ago and no problems since. I like the vinal tubing cover. Also, old BBC tip, put a piece of velcro on the handle to keep it from flying around.

    Re: (stretch)

There is a slit in my pull handle that will slip onto the frame and it wont move.

It only took about 5 minutes to complete.

Does the cable you used rust or is it some type of stainless? Also, where did you get the cable?

I got the cable at Ace hardware. Third year on the boat six+ trips to the coast and no rust. I got what they called airplane cable. No sign of rust at all. Cable clamps have though, but still in good working shape.

No rust on mine either. I used the little crimp on cable locks and there is no rust at all on anything.
