I just received a call from my boat mechanic, this weekend. He says that I have one cylinder at 82 pounds. 1999 j150plees. The compression numbers are as follows: 98 92 82 108 100 90. How much money should I expect to spend 1, 2, or 3 thousand? I plan on conducting my own compression check when I pick the boat up this week. I hope he was wrong about the 82.I have had an issue with fuel delivery I think. It will get out of the hole great sometimes, but other times it wont. Sometimes it will bog down and die. It has had a problem idling, ever since I bought it a month ago. So I figured the carbs were a little gummed up. So I took it to a boat mechanic. He told me that since I had a dead hole, It could last for 3 weeks or 3 years depending on how hard I ran the motor. He ran some evinrude power tune through it and said that this was the easiest and cheapest thing to try first. He also said that if he had to pull the carbs and clean them it would cost 50 bucks for the first carb and then 25 bucks for each additional carb. I found out I have 6 of them!
So, should I find another outboard or spend the money to have it rebuilt? Also, if I do have it rebuilt is it going to be "weaker' due to boring the cylinder walls bigger? I wouldn't think so though. Any response would be appreciated. Oh yeah, Does anybody have a 175 for sale, at a decent price?
