Padding/Foam/Matting that goes on the underside of compartment lids

What have some of you guys been using on the underside of your compartment lids after recarpeting them. Mine orginally had this black 1/4" - 3/16" thick foam like padding. Need some ideas on what to replace that with.

Hmm.....looks like you are talking about something totally different than what I am asking about. What I am referring to is fust a flat square piece of pad glued to the underside of the lids......Just like you have carpet on top of the lids, my lids have a foam type mat on the bottom. Its really not necessary, it just gives the underside a finished look. I see a lot of people that just paint the underside of their lids, some folks have decals, but mine had just a black pad glued to the underside.

What I have seen on the underside of some boats looks like closed cell foam. It is the same stuff used in refrigeration insulation applications because it won't absorb moisture. It can be bought in sheets. I read somewhere on here someone bought some at Lowes.

    Re: (rwainwright)

If I understand the foam you are talking about the pad is functional, will keep the compartment cooler, big advantage for live wells and coolers. It will also deaden sound. I have not found a good replacement though. I was told by an engineer of a foam company that the best material is a high-density foam, perhaps the same as Derik is mentioning for the same reasons. I would cut it out of a floor mat that is designed for anti-leg fatigue ($10-$15 for four 2’x2’ squares).

Deans Canvas shop has it at very reasonable prices. Big sheets for no seams just for BB manufacturers.

    No reason this shouldn't work.

Sure it would work but geez what a price!! That'd be around $100+ to do all of the lids of a bass boat. When I called Deans and priced them it was going to run right around $80 shipped to cover all of my lids. Their price was somewhere around $7 per foot by 40"'.

I used a roll of that blue camping mat sold at walmart to place under the lids of my livewells to decrease the amount of heat transferred in during a hot day. After cutting to size I used some exterior waterproof caulking to adhere the foam padding to the lids. Turned out very well. Mat was only like $4 for a 36"x60" by 0.75" thick roll.

You can get something really close to that from a Personal watercraft site. I used to race jet skis and that foam gasket you have in the their looks like a hood gasket for the older JS 440/550 Kawasaki jet skis.

You can call Legend and ask them for it. They will know exactly what you are talking about. I know you dont have a Legend, but they are very good about stuff like that. I order all kinds of boat parts from them.
