    Laying out pins in Gel??

Well I have decide on colors of my 20XD restore. All white Gel with Orange pins. OK how will I go about laying out the stripes after shooting the white gel? Should i do the orange first then mask and shoot the white? Also do I need to add the wax additive to what ever I layout first. I want a smooth surface between colors like on regular paint. Any info would help.. Thanks guys!!

me too! hows this sound tape of on top of the pins then shoot whats next to itlst coat with wax?duratec, let it set up awile then pull the tape and shoot the pins in carefully with the gun turned down with no tape. let this setup overnight then sand it down till the overspray from shooting pins is all gone the transition should be smooth then. sand the whole thing down and clearcoat if needed. this sounds like the best way to avoid a ridge. or do it in the opposite order might be less sanding if your pins are narrow shoot your pins then pull tape and shoot white right over them and sand it off? or a third option tape off and shoot every color separetely letting each cure with wax/ duratec then clear coat over everthing and sand out ridges and buff. if you are doing like 1" or narrower pins i would think #2 would be less work. i want to use 4 colors black hull, maroon big stripe, silver top and border of maroon then light pewter gold pins around silver border. this is stressfull as hell!

I'm right there with you guys on this. But heck, I can't even desire what color I want to go. I believe your second way would be the best way Jameson. Here is why, by spraying larger area first you wont have to build up or sand as much to blend the stripes after overspray. Which the only places you are gonna need clear is over flake. If that makes any sense.

From what I have read don't need one. Ill lay white everywhere except where my flake going to be. It will be neutral with black pigment there.

Thanks for the info!! No you dont need primer just sand really well before hand. We got a scrap bullet hull that we are going to practice on before we start. I will post results but will be a month or so!!

Depending on how BIG the stripes are going to be, on normal pins and stripes it is easier to lay the stripes on the boat first, let them cure and tape them up and spray the hull color, in your case white.

This way the stripes and hull color will hopefully be the same level, if you have sprayed them both the same, and the final wet sanding to smooth out the gel will be easier for you.

You need to be precise with the taping in order to clean lines.

Re: Laying out pins in Gel?? (87GT183)

Check out some of the vids on yahoo. Think I searched gel flake, one guy had about 10 vids covered from start to finish. I will be doing the same in the spring on a neglected abused Stroker, so post pics and anything you learn.

2stroked, i think you mean youtube? that guy spraying gel outside with his kid filming? he got the job done but i wouldnt waste your time watching all those. there really isnt anything better than these threads. i am staying up till 2-3 in the morning searching almost every night, i found a vid on yutube of a guy spraying a ranger the exact color i want and he looks like he really knows his chit but he doesnt talk ! f*#k!
What really messes you up is when you get off the bass boat sites, the other boat builders are all leaning towards paint. they mock gelcoat as some outdated technology, i was seriously thinking of just wrapping it after reading other sites threads, i found a guy right by me that will wrap it for 2,000, tempting. then i saw a boat on here it was someones new charger siting on the side of the road after he picked it up from the dealership, and got sparkles embedded into my brain! i am going for it! i dont care how many gallons or guns or pounds of flake ! once i start spraying i will post as often as i can. its at (93 stratos restore) if you want to wait and ride my coat tails thats fine i am a stubborn sob when people tell me not to try something i ALWAYS motivated to do it even more! sorry for my rant just got in from glassing stringers and a bit buzzed!

    Re: (jameson93)

Most of them lean towards paint because on a Big hulled boat, there is a ton of labor hours to get a re gelcoated boat sanded and compounded.
Paint is easier to apply, and does not require the labor to get it smooth like gel does, but paint is not as hard as gelcoat and will not withstand the punishment gelcoat will.

Get gallons of acetone when you start and a couple of 5 gallon buckets with lids filled to cover the guns, to drop the guns into to keep them from gumming up between passes.
