I have broken the buckle tab off of one strap. How the H--l do you get the buckle through the small slit.

Small buckle like this:

Not like this:


I know you take the screws out and reach in through the rod locker, but the buckle end won't fit through the small slit. I have the newer large kit, but the directions are useless. I do prefer the smaller look.
