    Buffing/Sanding Mistake..........

Got a 99 champion 202, owner before me put some junk on the boat called "New Gel" he said it strips the old gel off and puts new on. Well, it has made the boat look pink over time. Started to wet sand and buff and that stuff is pretty hard to get off. Has anyone ever heard of the stuff? Also am i getting past the gel coat if the water and residue coming from sanding is red, like the boat????? Thanks

No, the water needs to be clear, there are many threads regarding this in this forum. Use the search function to find them.

i have read alot about the buffing, but have never seen anything about color coming off. Does it matter if the boat is all gel and no flake?

The clear gel is thinner on a solid color hull. DOn't go any further. Just do some test areas to see how much to get the clear he put on off.

being a solid color is a good thing...you do not have clear gelcoat on the boat....you should be able to sand the stuff off and buff it......i bet he put it on because it was sun faded....when he should have sanded and buffed..see basscat7 post pinned at top about sanding buffing....get that stuff off and follow his post you will have a new boat!

    Re: (Rollo331)

    Listen to Rollo.

There is no clear gelcoat applied to solid color gels from the factory, so like He said You can sand deeper than you can with a polyflake color.

You are getting color in the sanding water because it is solid gelcoat rather than clear gel.

Some of that quick fix junk can be a lot of work to get off.

I have the same problem ,its like they sprayed the boat with clear coat with red in it. This is a sob to get off the boat. In order to get it out i would need to wet sand for days. Im thinking of just clear coating it again to see what happens.

by the way your lucky (no metal flake)

It turned out great, the gel looks perfect. Congrats! It's amazing what a little elbow grease can get out.
