    bent shifting rod

I have a EVINRUDE 1991 TE115TLEIE that I believe has a bent shifting rod. It will not stay in forward gear. I will go into reverse and will stay there, which by the way makes for a long ride back to the landing. Is the shifting rod anything anybody has replaced themselves? How hard is it and will I need any special tools? I need to get it done quick and the shop says they cant do it for at least 2 weeks. I NEED TO FISH!!!!!HELP!!!!!!!

Why do you think it is bent? Has the lower been recently serviced? Takes a lot to bend one of them.

A bent rod would not prevent the case from going in and out of gear. It's job is to be connected at the top and threaded in the case to the shifter detent. It sounds as if you have an adjustment issue. If it's been this way for awhile, you may have rounded the engagement dogs on the gear and/or done the same to the clutch dog. Try the adjustment first.
