Okay guys what is the best paint to use to paint my cowl? Also should clear coat be used? If so what brand on that also.

I painted a Johnson cowl one time with their paint and it turned out good, but you should clear coat everything once you're done...
As far as the Mercury factory paint goes, I hit a deer one time with a black car and the auto body people that I got estimates from said black is black. It didn't matter what manufacture it was.. They said the clear coats could be different types, but the base is all the same....
With that being said, I've got a 200 Mariner EFI that has the decals removed from the cowl. I've found a Mercury upper cowl in vgc, so I'm considering painting the rest of the motor it black and using it. My boats black w/ red pins, so I think it will look better in the Merc colors anyway. My question is: How will this spray can paint hold up below the waterline? I really don't have the money to spend on a body shop paint job....
