    Question on boat recarpeting??

Ok guys thinking of recarpeting my dads boat and have a few questions. I contacted Basscat today and found the carpewt we want. Next question is what type and how much glue/cement would I need to do a 17 foot baot. I have read where some use one type of glue to to do the top of the deck and another for the folds on the lids. If you could please list me some SPECIFIC brands of glues and cements that I will need to get started. Also where do you get the black molding that goes round the edge if he wanted to use that.
    Thanks
    Tom

Re: Question on boat recarpeting?? (catch5)

Just finished carpeting mine. 17 ft.

what type and how much glue/cement would I need to do a 17 foot boat?
About a gallon and a half of contact glue is what it took for me. Waterproof contact glue (not water resistant). Make sure it dries clear.

Specific brands. I picked the glue up from a boat shop, didnt have a name except for the packing slip showing it came from Ranger boats. $30 bucks a gallon.

I used the same glue for everything, decks and lids included. The only time I used a different glue was whan I did the side walls underneath the consoles. This required a lot of squeezing under the console and manuvering with the carpet to get the correct cut and fit. Contact glue does what it says, glues on contact...there is no adjusting it once its on. I was a little worried about "No forgiveness" using glue, but i didnt have any problems. For this tight spot what I knew I'd need to adjust, I used outdoor carpet adhesive (waterproof, though for under the console, water resistant would be just fine I imagine). The carpet adhesive gives you more wiggle room and is not instant setup.

Also where do you get the black molding that goes round the edge?
Basscat or Basspro. If you measure twice and cut well, you wont need it. My old carpet was too worn to use as templates. I picked up a roll of heavy brown paper from Lowes (find it in the aint section) and made templates from it. Laid it down on the boat and trimmed it out. Worked like a charm.

My boat looks like it was done by a professional, I was very pleased....especially with the money I saved.
